Support for Persistent Symptoms After COVID-19

For some people, recovery from COVID-19 does not end when the acute infection is over.

Long COVID can involve persistent or recurring symptoms affecting multiple body systems, including fatigue, shortness of breath, difficulty concentrating, dizziness, heart palpitations, headaches, muscle or joint pain, and other symptoms. The CDC recognizes Long COVID as a complex chronic condition that may persist for months or years. CDC

At Second Nature Care, Dr. Isadora Guggenheim works with patients who are looking for an individualized, integrative approach to post-COVID recovery.

One therapy that may be considered as part of that approach is Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation — EBOO.

What Is EBOO?

EBOO is an advanced form of ozone therapy.

During treatment, a controlled amount of blood circulates outside the body through specialized equipment, where it is exposed to medical ozone before being returned to the patient.

Unlike a standard ozone autohemotherapy treatment, EBOO allows a larger volume of blood to circulate through the system during a treatment session.

Why Are Patients Seeking Post-COVID Care?

Researchers continue to investigate why some people develop persistent symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Current research suggests that Long COVID may involve more than one underlying process, including:

The CDC specifically notes inflammation and microvascular dysfunction among the possible mechanisms being investigated in Long COVID. CDC

Because Long COVID can look very different from one person to another, there is no single treatment approach appropriate for every patient.

What About Spike Protein?

Many patients contact us because they have heard about persistent SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and want to know whether it may be contributing to their symptoms.

This is an active area of scientific research.

You may see treatments advertised online as a “spike protein detox” or “COVID detox.” At Second Nature Care, we prefer to look at the larger clinical picture rather than assume that one biological mechanism explains every patient’s symptoms.

Dr. Guggenheim can discuss your concerns, medical history, symptoms and available research with you and determine whether EBOO or another integrative approach may be appropriate.

What Does the Research Say About Ozone Therapy and Long COVID?

Research is still developing.

A 2024 randomized controlled pilot study investigated major ozone autohemotherapy in 73 patients with post-acute sequelae of COVID-19.

Patients receiving ozone autohemotherapy in addition to conventional treatment showed greater improvement in several measures than patients receiving conventional treatment alone, including symptom scores, walking capacity, inflammatory and coagulation markers, and measures of cellular immunity.

The researchers concluded that the results warranted further study. PubMed

This is encouraging early evidence, but it does not establish that EBOO removes spike protein from the body or that EBOO is a proven treatment for Long COVID.

Could EBOO Be Appropriate for You?

People seeking post-COVID evaluation may report concerns such as:

There are more than 200 symptoms associated with Long COVID, and different patients can experience very different combinations of symptoms. CDC

That is why evaluation comes before treatment.

An Individualized Approach

Dr. Isadora Guggenheim does not use a one-size-fits-all post-COVID protocol.

Your evaluation may include discussion of:

From there, Dr. Guggenheim can determine whether EBOO should be considered as part of your individualized care.
